Niels Hansen was born on 22 June 1880 in Nørre Vornæs, Tåsinge. His skill in portraiture was formally recognized when he was awarded the Eckersbergs Medal for his depiction of Professor Carl Petersen. He contributed decorative works to several significant municipal buildings, including the City Hall of Odense and the City Hall of Svendborg. In 1921, Hansen moved to Thurø, a location that would define the final chapter of his life. The landscape of the island provided a steady stream of subjects that he could easily identify and capture. He spent much of his time cultivating a lifelong passion for sailing, a pursuit that mirrored the maritime themes prevalent in his earlier work.
His presence in Thurø was marked by a nature that was both powerful and inclined toward celebration. He remained in this coastal setting until his death on 17 February 1946.
