Early Life and Artistic Training
Ludwig Karl Strauch was born on July 11, 1875, in Vienna, within the Austrian Empire. His early years involved a close connection to the visual arts, including a collaboration in 1882 on Martin Gerlach's Allegorien et Emblèmes. This early exposure preceded his formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He spent the decade between 1890 and 1899 within those academy walls, refining his technique under the guidance of Carl Rudolf Huber, Christian Griepenkerl, and August Eisenmenger.
The turn of the century brought a change in his surroundings. During 1899 and 1900, Strauch traveled to Italy as a scholar. This period of study allowed him to observe the light and forms of the Italian landscape firsthand. His training in Vienna and his time in Italy helped shape the technical foundation he would carry into his later years as a painter of portraits and landscapes.
Military Service and War Paintings
During the First World War, Strauch served as a lieutenant in the Imperial and Royal Army. His time in the military was marked by physical injury, as he was wounded during his service. Following this, on January 14, 1917, he was officially admitted as a war painter to the Imperial and Royal War Press Department. This role took him away from the studio and onto the front lines, where he was deployed to the Romanian and Italian fronts.
His sketches and paintings from this period capture the immediate reality of the conflict. Many of these works, dated around 1916, have been preserved and are now held in the collections of the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna. These pieces offer a view of the soldier's life and the landscape of the war as he experienced it firsthand.

Teaching and Local Artistic Circles
In 1905, Strauch took up a position as a teacher of freehand drawing at the Gymnasium in Klosterneuburg. It was within these classroom walls that he encountered the talent of Egon Schiele. Strauch saw something in the young student's work and offered the support necessary to help him move toward the Vienna Academy.
His involvement in the local art scene went beyond the classroom. In 1906, he became a co-founder of the Klosterneuburger Künstlerbund. He was a regular presence at the group's exhibitions, contributing his own pieces to the shows. His reach extended further as a member of the Meraner Circolo artistico.
Key Works and Artistic Subjects
Strauch’s brush moved between the quietude of the natural world and the stark realities of human conflict. His subjects were often found in the stillness of a landscape or the specific tension of a portrait. He captured the light of the evening in works like Landschaft mit Auwasser bei Abendröte, a piece created between 1925 and 1949. There is a sense of a specific moment caught on canvas, much like the scenes of leisure found in Feierabend in Riva am Gardasee. These works show a focus on how light and atmosphere settle over a particular place.
His output also included scenes of social gathering and the grit of the front lines. Around 1932, he painted Beach Festival near Klosterneuburg, capturing a moment of communal activity. This interest in the lived experience extended to his war paintings, where he documented the realities of the soldier's life. His portraits and landscape studies were not mere exercises but observations of the world as he saw it, whether in a quiet courtyard or amidst the movement of a crowd.
