The Life and Art of Narritjin Maymuru

Narritjin Maymuru was a Yolngu artist and activist from the Manggalili language group in North-East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Belonging to the Yirritja moiety, he was a multifaceted figure who served as a ceremonial leader, clan head, philosopher, and mediator. His artistic journey began in the 1940s following a period working as a cook. He was a significant figure in the creation of the Yirrkala Church Panels and played an influential role in the Yirrkala bark petitions of 1963, which served as a formal assertion of native title. Maymuru viewed his art as a vital medium to communicate Yolngu culture and knowledge, seeking to foster harmonious relationships between different cultures through the sharing of sacred designs.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

His work has been featured in numerous prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
