Charles Ginner:略歴

The Life and Artistic Journey of Charles Ginner

Born in Cannes, France, to British parents, Charles Isaac Ginner began his path toward becoming a painter despite initial parental disapproval. After a period of convalescence following an illness, he moved to Paris in 1899 to study architecture. He eventually transitioned to art, studying at the Academie Vitti and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. During his time in Paris, he worked under teachers such as Paul Gervais and Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa. In 1909, Ginner traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he held his first one-person show, an event that helped introduce post-Impressionism to South America.

In 1910, Ginner settled in London, becoming a key member of the Camden Town Group. His work often focused on urban subjects and landscapes, characterized by a meticulous detailing of buildings and trees in his watercolours. During both World Wars, he served in official capacities, including work for the Canadian War Records and as an Official War Artist during the second conflict, where he specialized in painting harbour scenes and bombed buildings in London.

Artistic Style and Recognition

Ginner's painting style was marked by several distinct characteristics and affiliations:

Throughout his career, Ginner was associated with several prominent groups, including the London Group and the Cumberland Market Group. His work is held in various collections, including the Tate Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, the latter of which contains a precise self-portrait of the artist.
