生い立ちと修行時代
チャールズ・ロバート・レスリーは、イギリス美術界において極めて重要な足跡を残した画家です。1794年10月19日、ロンドンにてアメリカ人の両親のもとに生を受けました。5歳の時、家族と共にフィラデルフィウムへと渡り、そこで教育を修めます。当初、レスリーは書店の徒弟として修行を積んでいましたが、その魂が真に惹かれていたのは、絵画と演劇の世界でした。
芸術家としての歩み
1811年、推薦状を手にロンドンへと戻ったレスリーは、ベンジャミン・ウエストをはじめとする著名な芸術家たちの支援を受け、その才能を開花させていきます。1813年には王立アカデミー・スクールに入学し、二度の銀メダルを授与されるなど、その若き才能は早くから認められていました。ウエストやフュスリの影響を受け、初期のレスリーは壮大な歴史画の主題を探求していましたが、やがて彼は風俗画という自らの真の天命を見出すことになります。
