生い立ちと原点（1829-1851）

誕生：1829年11月11日、ニューヨーク州オニオンタにて。

カーレトン・E・ワトキンスは、大工のジョンと宿屋を営むジュリアの間に生まれた8人兄弟の長男でした。

豊かな自然に囲まれた環境で育った彼は、狩猟や釣りの技術を磨くとともに、合唱団や長老派教会の聖歌隊といった地域活動にも親しみました。

1851年、一攫千金の夢に突き動かされ、ワトキンスは幼馴染のコリス・ハンティントンと共にサンフランシスコへと旅立ちます。

初期のキャリアと写真との出会い（1851-1861）

金鉱探しという当初の目的こそ果たせませんでしたが、ワトキンスとハンティントンはそれぞれ異なる分野で成功を収めることとなります。

ワトキンスはまず、鉱山運営のための物資配送員として働き、その後ジョージ・マレーの書店で店員を務めました。

転機となった瞬間：ダゲレオタイプ写真師ロバート・H・ヴァンスのスタジオに予期せぬ欠員が生じたことで、写真技術の経験が全くなかったワトキンスは、弟子入りすることになります。

最期と遺されたレガシー

経済的な困窮により、ワトキンス一家は18ヶ月もの間、鉄道の客車での生活を余儀なくされました。

1906年のサンフランシスコ大地震と火災は、彼のスタジオとともに、数え切れないほどの写真やネガを焼き尽くしてしまいました。

その後、カペイ・ランチへと移り住みましたが、1910年には心神喪失の宣告を受け、ナパ州立精神病院に入所することとなります。

逝去：1916年、彼はこの世を去り、病院の敷地内にある無名の墓に葬られました。
