Paulí Collado i Martínez: A Sculptor Rooted in Nature
Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1932, Paulí Collado i Martínez’s life and artistic journey were inextricably linked to the Catalan landscape. His early years, spent in Barcelona before relocating to Cornellà de llobregat with his wife, provided a fertile ground for an appreciation of both urban and rural environments – a duality that would profoundly shape his sculptural vision. Initially drawn to the practical skills of welding, honed during his working life, Collado’s passion for art quickly superseded any purely vocational pursuit. He wasn't simply a craftsman; he was driven by a deep-seated desire to translate the essence of nature into enduring metal forms.
Collado’s artistic philosophy centered on capturing the spirit and dynamism of the natural world. Rejecting rigid formalism, his sculptures are characterized by an organic fluidity, mirroring the curves of branches, the flow of water, and the textures of stone. This approach wasn't achieved through meticulous realism but rather through a sensitive understanding of form and proportion, allowing him to evoke feeling and atmosphere more powerfully than precise representation. His work is a testament to his belief that art should be an honest reflection of its subject – in this case, the profound beauty and inherent movement found within nature.
The Language of Iron
Collado’s masterful command of iron was central to his artistic identity. He possessed an intuitive grasp of the material's properties—its malleability, strength, and capacity for transformation. His background as a welder provided him with invaluable knowledge of metalworking techniques, which he skillfully integrated into his sculptural process. Unlike many sculptors who rely solely on traditional methods, Collado embraced innovative approaches to iron fabrication, often employing techniques that allowed him to create complex, interwoven structures that seemed to defy gravity.
Texture and Surface: Collado’s sculptures are renowned for their tactile surfaces. He meticulously manipulated the metal's texture through a combination of hammering, grinding, and polishing, creating a rich tapestry of visual and physical sensations. Form and Movement: The use of negative space within his iron forms is particularly noteworthy. Collado expertly employed voids to suggest movement, capturing the fleeting moments of natural phenomena – a ripple in water, the sway of branches in the wind.Scale and Proportion: While often monumental in scale, Collado’s sculptures are carefully balanced, creating a sense of harmony between the human viewer and the natural world they represent.
Notable Works and Recognition
Paulí Collado i Martínez's work has garnered significant recognition within the Spanish art community and beyond. His sculptures have been featured in prestigious institutions such as the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias in Oviedo, where his “Papallona” sculpture – a striking representation of a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis – stands as a powerful symbol of transformation and rebirth. This piece, along with others like "Leandre Cristòfol i Peralba," exemplifies his ability to imbue inanimate metal with a sense of life and dynamism.

Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC): His sculptures have also been exhibited at this prominent Barcelona institution, further solidifying his place within Catalan artistic history.
Legacy and Influence
Paulí Collado i Martínez’s legacy extends far beyond the individual works he created. He left an indelible mark on the Catalan art scene, inspiring a generation of sculptors to explore the expressive potential of iron and to draw inspiration from the natural world. His commitment to honest representation, combined with his technical mastery and unique artistic vision, ensures that his sculptures will continue to resonate with viewers for years to come. Collado’s work serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of art to capture beauty, evoke emotion, and connect us to the fundamental rhythms of nature.
