The Life and Career of Jacques Waben
Born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, in 1590, Jacques Waben emerged during the Dutch Golden Age as a painter of both portraiture and history. His professional activity spanned several decades, beginning around 1602 and continuing until his death in 1634. While his reputation was built upon his ability to handle both small-scale works and larger compositions, his career was marked by a versatility that allowed him to navigate different genres of Dutch painting.
Waben’s life was closely tied to the northern regions of the Netherlands. He was known to have worked in Hoorn, where he produced various historical scenes. His skill in capturing human character and narrative was noted by his contemporaries, particularly through his ability to translate complex biblical stories into visual form. He was a man of varied interests, also serving as a captain of 130 waardgelders, a role that suggests a life of civic engagement alongside his artistic pursuits.
The artist passed away in Hoorn in 1634. Though much of his output remains in private hands, his presence in the Dutch art scene of the seventeenth century is confirmed by the surviving records of his presence in the local landscape. He left behind a body of work that reflects the meticulous attention to detail required by the portraiture and history painting of his era.
Notable Works and Subjects
Waben’s output reflects the dual nature of a painter navigating both the intimate demands of portraiture and the grander narratives of history painting. His early engagement with individual likenesses is evidenced by his 1611 portrait of Jacob Dircksz van Foreest. This focus on the social fabric of the Dutch Republic continued into the following decade. In 1622, he painted the portrait of Grietje Adriaensdr Grootes, a work that captures the subject in a standing pose, holding a booklet and gloves, with a family crest positioned in the upper right corner.
Beyond the likeness of specific individuals, Waben turned his attention to biblical and allegorical themes, often working in multiple panels to convey complex stories. His interest in these historical narratives is seen in his 1624 depiction of Jacob Meeting Rachel. This interest in dramatic, scripted moments extended into his later years through his treatment of the story of Jephthah. He produced a history of Jephthah in 1625, alongside a specific scene titled Jephthah’s Daughter Welcoming her Father Home from the Battlefield, also dated 1625.
Where to See the Works Today
The survival of Waben’s output is scattered across various institutions and private hands. Much of his oeuvre remains within local private collections, preserved away from the public eye. However, several significant pieces have found permanent homes in established museums. The Westfries Museum holds a selection of his paintings, maintaining a connection to the regional history of his active years.
For those seeking his portraiture, the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands houses the 1622 portrait of Grietje Adriaensdr Grootes. This work, which depicts the second wife of Jacob Symonszn Coninck, provides a clear example of his ability to capture the likeness and status of his subjects. Beyond the borders of the Netherlands, his reach extends to the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, where the painting Jacob Meeting Rachel is held.
