Later Years and Death
Upon returning to England, Tilson found himself well-positioned within the social circles of the time. His family connections helped secure his place among the portraitists of London. His studio was a place of significant substance; at the time of his passing, he left behind a considerable estate that included gold, silver plate, jewels, and various paintings.
The trajectory of his career was cut short by a personal tragedy. In 1695, at the age of thirty-six, he took his own life in London. This act, driven by disappointment in love, ended a career that had been gaining momentum in the post-Lely era.
