The Quiet Hand of František Hübel
In the small rooms of a studio, the work of František Hübel took shape through a steady, deliberate process. Born in Krásno nad Kysucou, he moved through the world of lines and shapes with a focus that favored the precision of the printmaker. His hands were trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he spent his years between 1953 and 1959 learning the weight of a woodcut and the subtle textures of printmaking under the guidance of Vincent Hložník. He did not merely observe; he translated the world into figural compositions and the delicate narratives required for books intended for children and youth.
His life was marked by a transition from the structured environment of a publishing house to the independence of a freelance existence. From 1962 to 1968, he worked as an art editor at the Mladé letá publishing company, a period that likely sharpened his eye for how an image supports a story. This time spent among the mechanics of publishing informed the way he approached both the page and the canvas. He moved between the roles of painter, printmaker, and illustrator, never staying too long in one mode to the exclusion of the others.
Technique and Form
The physical reality of his work is found in the grain of wood and the spread of ink on paper. He worked with various materials, from the simple cardboard and white paper of his smaller studies to the larger canvases that hung in galleries. His output was diverse, spanning from the graphic clarity of a woodcut to the more fluid application of paint. Some of his pieces were small, measuring only 13 x 17 cm, while others grew to a more substantial presence on the wall.
His development can be seen through the specific ways he handled his subjects:
- The use of woodcut to create structured, graphic compositions.
- The creation of figural works that explored the human form.
- The development of illustrations for literature aimed at younger readers.
- The application of paint in works like Tvary XVIII.
A Legacy Found in Silence
Much of what is known about his output came to light only after his passing in Bratislava. A collection of previously unknown works was discovered in his studio, revealing a depth of practice that had remained private. These pieces, such as the Citadel of Civilisation, show a man deeply engaged with the geometry of his craft. He was influenced by the work of Stanislav Bíroš, a connection that helped shape his early understanding of form and space. His work remains a part of the visual history of the region, held in collections from Nitra to Banská Bystrica, preserved in the quiet spaces of museums and archives.
