The Life and Training of Carl Rudolf Huber
Carl Rudolf Huber was born on 15 August 1839 in Schleinz, Austria. His early years were shaped by the landscapes of the region, a background that would later inform his focus on animal subjects. He moved through the formal stages of artistic education, seeking out the specific disciplines of painting and graphic work. His training took him to the academies of fine arts in both Vienna and Düsseldorf, where he refined the technical skills required for both illustration and formal painting.
His time in these academic settings allowed him to develop the precision needed for his later work as a teacher and graphic artist. He did not limit himself to a single medium, working instead as a painter, illustrator, and cartoonist. This versatility required a steady hand and a keen eye for detail, qualities he carried from his student days into his professional life. He eventually settled in Vienna, the city where he would spend much of his working life.
The end of his life came in Vienna, where he died on 28 August 1896. His path from a student in the academies to a recognized figure in the Viennese art scene was marked by a consistent dedication to the study of form and subject matter. He left behind a body of work that reflects the disciplined training he received in the mid-19th century.
Professional Career and Academic Teaching
In 1875, Huber traveled to Egypt alongside Leopold Carl Müller, Hans Makart, and Franz von Lenbach. This trip placed him among a specific circle of painters during a period of intense interest in the landscapes and light of the region. His time there contributed to the development of his focus on animal subjects and portraits.
By 1880, his role shifted toward the academic sphere when he began serving as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Within the academy, he established and led a specialized school dedicated to animal painting. His teaching focused on the technical nuances of capturing animal life, a discipline that drew students to his studio. Among those who studied under his guidance was Alexander Pock.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
Huber found his footing through the study of portraits and animal paintings. His brushwork often focused on the specific textures of subjects, whether the skin of a person or the coat of an animal. This interest in the physical presence of his subjects defined much of his output, moving between the quiet observation of a sitter and the more active depiction of animals.
One notable oil on canvas from 1889 is titled "Excursion of a Lady from a Harim (in Cairo)". The work measures 120.5 x 80.5 cm when framed. His paintings reached audiences beyond his immediate circle, appearing in the 1890 Berlin LXII. exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts. Through these works, he captured specific moments and settings, such as the scenes from Cairo, with a steady and observant hand.
