    O ovom umjetničkom djelu

    Tundra — juliana herrero

Tundra is a floating sound landscape from the series Sabana, Estepa, Tundra, which elevates like a utopian fragment, a digital “matrix” in its physical form: a sound installation of steel wire and mini speakers. It starts developing from the articulated equilateral triangles that evoke the landscape infinity. The audio stratifies found materials, such as the sound of wind, concrete poetry that alludes to the cold steppe (electronic voices) and guitar harmonics especially created. The work opposes nature and artifice, its light tactile form and the electronic cables. Approaching to the concepts of post-humanism and Anthropocene, it turns into a metaphor of change processes, capturing the specific movement of a floating landscape that, potentially, inscribes a multiplicity of them. The Cartography of Atmosphere: The Art of Juliana Herrero

Born in 1975 amidst the rugged landscapes of Choele Choel, Río Negro, Argentina, Juliana Herrero carries within her a creative pulse shaped by the vastness of Patagonia. Her artistic identity is a profound dialogue between geographies, a movement across latitudes that connects the windswept plains of southern Argentina with the intellectual rigor of European contemporary art. Having been raised between the presence of mountains and the sea, Herrero’s early life instilled in her a foundational connection to nature—not merely as a subject, but as an active participant in her creative process. This deep-seated environmental awareness serves as the bedrock for a practice that seeks to map the invisible boundaries between the physical world and the ephemeral sensations of sound and space.

Herrero’s academic journey is as much a bridge between continents as her life is. Her multidisciplinary training began in Argentina, studying dance and music at INSA (now IUPA) and architecture at FADU UBA in Buenos Aires. This unique convergence of disciplines—the rhythmic precision of music, the physical presence of dance, and the structural logic of architecture—allows her to approach art through a lens of spatial sensibility. Her subsequent move to Germany, where she studied conceptual design and film at the prestigious Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main under the guidance of figures like Mark Leckey, further expanded her vocabulary. Since 2006, based primarily in Vienna while maintaining a vital presence in Buenos Aires, her work has evolved into a sophisticated exploration of how we inhabit time and place.

    Immersive Realities and Sonic Landscapes

The essence of Herrero’s practice lies in the concept of Sur[real]isation—a delicate, shifting field where the real and the imagined coalesce. She does not merely create objects; she constructs architectures of atmospheres. Her work often manifests as site-specific installations that function as immersive realities, inviting the viewer to step into a world that is both fragile and profound. These works are frequently characterized by their ephemeral nature, utilizing materials like steel wire, electronic cables, and light tactile forms to create "floating" landscapes. In pieces such as Tundra, part of her evocative series Sabana, Estepa, Tundra, she utilizes a digital matrix of mini speakers and steel wire to evoke the infinite horizon of the cold steppe, layering found sounds like wind and electronic voices with carefully composed guitar harmonics.

Through her use of sound frequencies and sculptural elements, Herrero explores the tension between nature and artifice. Her installations often act as metaphors for change, touching upon contemporary themes such as post-humanism and the Anthropocene. By integrating sonic textures with physical structures, she creates a synesthetic experience where sight, sound, and space become inseparable. This approach allows her to capture the specific movement of landscapes that are in constant flux, turning the act of viewing into an act of listening and presence.

    Recognition and Artistic Legacy

Throughout her career, Herrero has achieved significant recognition within the international contemporary art circuit. Her ability to blend diverse media—ranging from watercolor and experimental cyanotype to moving image and performance—has earned her accolades such as the Austrian Outstanding Artist Award – Interdisciplinary in 2015 and the Andreani Foundation Visual Arts Award. Her exhibition history spans prestigious institutions including Künstlerhaus Vienna, Kajaani Art Museum in Finland, and Maison de l’Argentine in Paris, demonstrating the global resonance of her localized explorations.

The historical significance of Juliana Herrero’s work lies in her ability to redefine the boundaries of installation art. By treating displacement as a form of multiple belonging, she creates a body of work that speaks to the modern condition of fluidity and movement. Her legacy is found in the quiet, powerful moments of her installations: the way a sound vibrates through a wire, or how a sculptural form captures the memory of a landscape. She remains a vital voice in contemporary art, continuously pushing the limits of how we perceive the intersection of the tangible world and the intangible spirit.
