Jedan od "Whitechapel Boys" – skupina umjetnika iz East Enda koja se pojavila početkom 20. stoljeća.
Rođen u obitelji poljsko-židovskih imigranata, Abrahama i Rebecke Bomberg, David je svoje prve korake u umjetnosti napravio u Tehničkoj umjetničkoj školi City and Guilds, prije nego što je u Birminghamu prošao obuku za litograf.
Studirao je pod vodstvom Waltera Sickerta u Westminster School of Art (1908. – 1910.), pod snažnim utjecajem Sickertovog fokusa na formu i urbani život. Ključni trenutak bile su susreti s djelima Paula Cézannea putem Roger Fryjeve izložbe "Manet i postimpresionisti" iz 1910. godine. Kratko je bio povezan s Omega radionicama Bloomsbury grupe i izlagao s Camden Town Groupom. Iako je pokazivao afinitet prema vorticističkom pokretu Wyndhama Lewisa, ostao je neovisno umjetničko lice, odbijajući potpuno uključenje u taj krug.
Od rata do pejzaža: Promjena stila
Iskustva kao obični vojnik tijekom Prvog svjetskog rata duboko su utjecala na njegov umjetnički vid, potičući odmak od apstrakcije prema nečem opipljivijem.
Dvadesete godine donijele su Bombergov prijelaz u figurativniji stil, s fokusom na portrete i pejzaže izravno oslikane iz prirode. Razvio je sve ekspresivniju tehniku, obilježenu teksturiranim impastom i emocionalnim intenzitetom.
Snažan utjecaj na njegov kasniji rad imali su opsežni putovanja kroz Bliski istok (posebno Palestina) i Europu. Njegovi prikazi Jeruzalema posebno su značajni u tom kontekstu.
Kasne godine i naslijeđe
Od 1945. do 1953. godine predavao je na Borough Polytechnicu (današnjem London South Bank University), utječući na generaciju umjetnika kao što su Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Philip Holmes, Cliff Holden, Edna Mann, Dorothy Mead, Gustav Metzger, Dennis Creffield, Cecil Bailey i Miles Richmond.
Bio je oženjen umjetnicom pejzaža, Lilian Holt.
Unatoč periodima relativne zaboravljenosti tijekom života, Bombergovo djelo je posljednjih desetljeća dobilo sve veće priznanje kao značajan doprinos britanskoj modernoj umjetnosti.
U njegov čast nazvana je i David Bomberg House na London South Bank University.
