early life and career

Milton Viola Fernandes, better known as millôr, was born in Rio de Janeiro on August 16, 1923. His birth certificate rendered the name “Millôr”, which he later adopted as his official moniker—a deliberate choice reflecting his artistic sensibilities.

He embarked upon his journalistic journey in 1938, securing positions at prominent Brazilian publications like *O Cruzeiro* and *A Cigarra*. Immediately recognized for his distinctive ironic humor, millôr cultivated a prolific output of satirical aphorisms that captured the spirit of the era.

In 1956, he achieved considerable acclaim at the Buenos Aires International Caricature Exhibition, sharing the first prize with Saul Steinberg. This recognition underscored his mastery of visual satire and cemented his reputation as one of Brazil’s foremost cartoonists.

Furthermore, millôr established *O Pasquim* in 1969 alongside Jaguar, Ziraldo, and others—a groundbreaking satirical newspaper that challenged societal norms and championed artistic freedom.

artistic contributions

Millôr's artistic output extended beyond caricature; he demonstrated remarkable versatility as a playwright, crafting narratives imbued with social commentary and humor.

His translations of literary classics, notably Shakespeare’s plays, showcased his intellectual curiosity and contributed to the dissemination of Western literature within Brazil.

Though not exclusively featured at *Museu Antônio Parrêiras*, millôr's artistic vision aligns with the museum’s ethos—a celebration of satirical art that mirrors themes explored in collections by Antônio Diogo da Silva Parrêiras.

international recognition

Millôr Fernandes’ participation in the Buenos Aires International Caricature Exhibition stands as a testament to his global acknowledgment within the artistic community.

later life and passing

Millôr Fernandes peacefully departed this world on March 27, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, at the age of 88, succumbing to complications arising from a stroke.
