early life and career

Claude-Marie Ferrier (1811–1889) was an early French photographer, known for his portraits of prominent French people, his work at the London Great Exhibition, and for his production of stereoviews. He began his artistic journey in Lyon, France, where he studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon.

Initially drawn to painting, Ferrier soon discovered a fascination with the emerging medium of photography. Recognizing its potential for capturing reality with unprecedented detail and immediacy, he transitioned into this field, mastering techniques that would become foundational to 19th-century visual culture.

A pivotal moment in Ferrier’s career arrived in 1851 when he joined forces with Hugh Owen, a celebrated English photographer. Together, they embarked on an ambitious project: documenting the exhibits at the Great Exhibition held in London. This monumental undertaking demanded meticulous observation and skillful execution.

The organizers of the exhibition recognized Ferrier’s talent and entrusted him with creating over 140 bound sets of reports and accompanying photographs – a feat that cemented his reputation as one of the era's foremost visual chroniclers. These stunning stereoviews captivated audiences and garnered considerable acclaim, establishing Owen and Ferrier as pioneers in photographic documentation.

awards and recognition

Ferrier’s dedication to artistic excellence was acknowledged by the French Academy when he received a silver medal at the Exposition universelle of Paris in 1855. This honor underscored his contribution to the advancement of art and science during a period marked by rapid innovation.

Furthermore, Ferrier played an instrumental role in introducing stereoscopy – the technique of creating three-dimensional images – to the public. He collaborated with David Brewster, inventor of the stereoscope, producing innovative photographic series that revolutionized how people experienced visual representations.

partnership and legacy

Ferrier’s artistic vision extended beyond individual projects; he established a successful partnership with Jules Duboscq, fostering collaboration and expanding their reach within the burgeoning stereoview industry. However, circumstances shifted when Duboscq faced financial difficulties, prompting Ferrier to forge a new alliance.

In 1859, Ferrier joined forces with his son and Charles Soulier, creating Ferrier & Soulier Stereoscopic Views Ltd., which quickly became a dominant force in the production of stereoviews and picture postcards. The company’s enduring success testifies to Ferrier's astute business acumen and unwavering commitment to artistic excellence.

Despite being sold in 1863 to Léon & Lévy, Ferrier and Soulier continued their collaborative endeavors, ensuring that Ferrier’s photographic legacy persisted. His images continue to inspire artists and scholars alike, serving as invaluable records of a transformative era in art history.

Claude-Marie Ferrier's work resides in collections worldwide, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, safeguarding his contributions to photography and visual culture for generations to come.
