Vilhelm Peter Carl Petersen (17 December 1812 – 25 July 1880) stands as a pivotal figure in the development of Danish landscape painting. Born in Copenhagen, the son of a wagon manufacturer, his artistic journey began with formal training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of Eckersberg and Lund. Petersen’s early work quickly established him as one of the first Danish artists to embrace the evocative beauty of Bornholm and the rugged moorlands of Jutland – landscapes that would become central themes throughout his career. His fascination with small fishing villages, capturing their quiet charm and connection to the sea, is a hallmark of his distinctive style.
