    Benbridge's childhood was marked by an unusual blend of privilege and circumstance. The son of James and Mary Benbridge, he enjoyed an upbringing fostered by his stepfather, Thomas Gordon, a wealthy Scottish merchant who recognized and nurtured the boy’s artistic talent. This early encouragement manifested in decorative designs for Gordon’s drawing-room – intricate patterns and motifs that demonstrated a nascent skill and a keen eye for aesthetics. There, he continued to practice as a portrait painter, catering to the wealthy elite of the region. He later moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he mentored Thomas Sully, one of America’s most celebrated portrait painters, imparting his knowledge and techniques.
