The Artistic Evolution of Astolfo Petrazzi

Astolfo Petrazzi was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, primarily active in his hometown of Siena, though his work also extended to Spoleto and Rome. His early training was deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of Siena, having been a pupil of Francesco Vanni. During this formative period, his work also showed the influence of Ventura Salimbeni. His early compositions, such as St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata, are characterized by angular drapery and swift flickering color, while other works like Virgin with Child and St. Catherine of Siena demonstrate a sweetness of expression and a domestic mood.

Between 1610 and 1620, Petrazzi developed a new style that drew from the Caravaggesque naturalism of Rutilio di Lorenzo Manetti and Francesco Rustici, as well as the direct realism of Cigoli and Matteo Rosselli. His time in Rome during the 1620s led him to respond to the classical trends of contemporary Roman painting, a shift evident in works such as The Last Communion of St. Jerome and Young John the Baptist Comforted by Angels. In his later years, Petrazzi produced copious works, including still-lifes and genre scenes, and he also presided over a drawing school for students in his home.
