His father, a Massachusetts Superior Court judge, instilled within him and his six siblings a love for art, particularly Asian art, which would become a cornerstone of McLaughlin’s artistic vision. This early exposure wasn't merely aesthetic; it was the beginning of a lifelong exploration into the principles of balance, harmony, and the power of emptiness – concepts central to Zen Buddhism that profoundly influenced his work. His wartime experiences, serving as a translator in both conflicts, further broadened his perspective, exposing him to diverse cultures and solidifying an introspective nature.

    McLaughlin’s path toward abstraction wasn't direct. After marrying Florence Emerson, grandniece of Ralph Waldo Emerson, in 1928, the couple moved to Japan in 1935.
