Koon Wai Bong: Bridging Tradition and Contemporary Vision
Koon Wai Bong (管偉邦), born in Hong Kong in 1974, stands as a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese landscape painting and installation art—a synthesis of profound respect for artistic heritage alongside an unwavering embrace of innovative expression. His journey began with a fascination for Western art forms like oil painting and drawing during his formative years, establishing a foundational understanding of diverse artistic methodologies. This early exposure fueled his intellectual curiosity and propelled him toward formal studies at New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992, where he immersed himself in the intricacies of guohua—the traditional Chinese ink wash painting style championed by Johnson Chou.
This pivotal experience instilled within him a deep appreciation for literati painting’s philosophical underpinnings and meticulous technique, shaping his artistic sensibilities for years to come. Recognizing the importance of comprehensive skill development, Koon pursued his bachelor's degree with diligence, honing his abilities across various mediums—a testament to his commitment to mastering the craft of visual art. Further enriching his artistic repertoire was a postgraduate fellowship at The Chinese University of Hong Kong between 2000 and 2002, where he studied under Lü Shoukun, a master of ink painting who profoundly influenced Koon’s stylistic evolution. Lü Shoukun's guidance encouraged Koon to explore new approaches while simultaneously honoring the enduring legacy of ancient artistic traditions.
Between 2012 and 2013, Koon completed his doctorate at RMIT Melbourne, Australia, solidifying his academic credentials alongside expanding his artistic horizons. His doctoral research focused on examining the intersection between Eastern and Western artistic philosophies—a reflection of his intellectual breadth and dedication to critical engagement with art history. He attained his bachelor's degree shortly afterwards through his study of various skills and the concepts of Chinese Literati Painting. Recognizing the importance of comprehensive skill development, Koon pursued his bachelor's degree with diligence, honing his abilities across various mediums—a testament to his commitment to mastering the craft of visual art. He began exploring Chinese painting, inspired by guohua artist Johnson Chou. This early exposure fueled his intellectual curiosity and propelled him toward formal studies at New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992.
His artistic oeuvre focuses on landscape painting and the aesthetics of ink painting, encompassing history, modern viewing experiences and perceptions of landscapes in ink art. He relishes exemplifying his ideas by his participation in landscape-based projects such as “Here & There” (HK, 2023), “The Islands and Other Places” (Taipei, 2019), “Hong Kong Waters and Korean Mountains” (HK, 2019), and “Picturing Hong Kong” (HK, 2017). His solo exhibitions include “Rêverie” (Taipei, 2025), “Watching the Clouds Roll By” (Shanghai, 2021), “Shén Yóu” (Beijing, 2019), “In the Breeze” (Taipei, 2017) and “TRANSpose” (UK, 2013), while notable group exhibitions include “Into View: New Voices, New Stories” (US, 2024) and “The Weight of Lightness” (HK, 2017). His doctoral research focused on examining the intersection between Eastern and Western artistic philosophies—a reflection of his intellectual breadth and dedication to critical engagement with art history. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (1996) and Master of Arts in Fine Arts (2002) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his Doctor of Fine Arts (2012) from RMIT University, Australia. Currently the Assistant Professor of The Hong Kong Baptist University, Koon’s works are collected by Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, M+, Hong Kong Museum of Art, among others.
