1862 - 1895

A Life Shaped by Passion and Persistence

Achille Koetschet was born on June 18, 1862, in St-Imier, within the Swiss Jura. His path toward becoming a landscape painter was not a straight one. Though he felt a deep pull toward drawing from a very young age, his father had different plans for his future. Instead of following his artistic inclinations, he was sent to Geneva to serve a three-year apprenticeship as a druggist. This period of training in a pharmacy was a detour from the life he truly desired, yet it could not extinguish his inner drive to create.

After his time in Geneva, he moved to a large trading house in Marseille. However, the pull of art remained constant. When his father eventually settled in Paris, Achille followed, finally finding the opportunity to pursue his vocation. In 1885, he was admitted to the Académie Julian, a significant step that allowed him to refine his skills and transition from a student of commerce to a dedicated painter of the natural world.

The Landscape and the Light

His work focused on the quiet beauty of the landscape, capturing the essence of the places he encountered. His technical development was marked by a commitment to the scenery that surrounded him, moving from the structured training of the academy to a more personal way of seeing the earth. His output was characterized by several key elements of his life and training:

  • His origins in Delémont and the Swiss Jura.
  • His formal training at the Académie Julian.
  • His focus on landscape subjects.
  • His connection to the artistic traditions of his region.

One of his notable works, titled Rue de la Kasbah à Alger, shows a departure from the familiar landscapes of his youth, suggesting an interest in the light and architecture of different environments. This piece, along with his other works, reflects a man who sought to translate the physical world onto canvas through a lens of observation and patience.

A Quiet Legacy

Achille Koetschet died on November 4, 1895, in Camiers, Pas-de-Calais. His life was relatively short, yet he managed to establish himself within the artistic circles of his time. He was the nephew of Joseph Koetschet, and his presence in the art world was felt through his participation in various exhibitions. His contributions remain held in collections such as the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Reims, where his vision of the landscape continues to be preserved.
