Giuseppe Sciuti: Biografie

The Life and Art of Giuseppe Sciuti

Born in Zafferana Etnea, Sicily, Giuseppe Sciuti initially faced a path toward pharmacy, as his father desired. However, he pursued artistic training, studying under Giuseppe Destefani, Giuseppe Rapisardi, and Antonino Gandolfo. Despite early hardships caused by an eruption of Etna that impoverished his family, Sciuti eventually traveled to Florence. There, he produced works such as The Widow and The Betrayed, which were exhibited in Catania and purchased by the City Government.

Sciuti's career expanded through Naples, Genoa, and Rome, where he specialized in various themes:

  • Genre and Patriotic Themes: Including works like You mothers of the country and An episode during the sack of Catania.
  • Neo-Pompeian Subjects: Focusing on ancient Roman and Greek themes, such as Pindar exalts the winner of an Olympic Game and La Corsa a Piedi.
  • Frescoes and Decorations: Notable works include the ceilings of the Palazzo Calanna and the Acireale Cathedral, as well as large theater curtains for the Massimo Theater of Catania and the Theater of Palermo.
