The Art Collection of HAM Helsinki Art Museum
Located in Tennispalatsi within the Kamppi district, HAM Helsinki Art Museum manages an extensive collection of over 10,000 works. Owned and operated by the city of Helsinki, the institution focuses on 20th- and 21st-century Finnish art alongside selected international pieces. These works exist as physical presences within the museum's walls, offering a quiet encounter with the visual language of the recent past and the present.
The reach of the collection extends far beyond the interior of the building. Approximately 2,500 artworks are installed in public spaces throughout the city. These pieces reside in parks, streets, schools, libraries, and daycare centers, integrating art into the daily movement of the urban landscape. This distribution ensures that the city's holdings are encountered in many different environments.
Exhibitions and Cultural Programs
The museum hosts a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions within its walls. A dedicated permanent exhibition features the works of Tove Jansson, including two large frescoes originally created for the Helsinki City Hall restaurant. These works exist as physical presences that anchor the museum's interior. Beyond these fixed displays, the institution acts as a venue for the Helsinki Biennial, an international contemporary art exhibition that extends its reach across multiple locations, including Vallisaari Island and Esplanade Park.
Engagement with the art is facilitated through guided tours and various workshops. These programs are designed to be accessible, offering family-friendly activities that invite different generations to interact with the collections. The museum also provides a shop where visitors can find items related to the exhibitions. Such offerings ensure that the space remains a site of active cultural engagement rather than a silent repository.
