A Life Across Borders

Born Jörg Dieter Möller in Kassel, Germany, the man who would later be known as Yargo De Lucca carried the spirit of many lands within him. His early years were shaped by the landscapes of Wittelsberg, Hessen, and Ontario, Canada, creating a foundation of dual identity that would define his later movements. He sought formal training through the great academic centers of Europe, studying in Frankfurt, Munich, and Marburg before finding his way to the Stuttgart Academy of Art. It was there, under the guidance of Willi Baumeister, that his artistic sensibilities began to take shape.

In 1951, he made a significant change by moving to Canada and eventually becoming a Canadian citizen. This period of his life saw him dividing his time between studios in Deux Montagnes, Canada, and Altenrhein am Bodensee, Switzerland. His wanderlust did not end there; he also found a home for his work in Alicante, Spain. These varied residences allowed him to absorb the light and atmosphere of different continents, a practice that informed his diverse output as a painter, graphic artist, and sculptor.

Recognition and Accolades

The path of his career was marked by a steady accumulation of honors from various corners of the globe. His early success began in Los Angeles with the Tima Award in 1945, followed later by the Dow Award in Montreal in 1958. As he moved through the middle decades of the century, his reputation grew within prestigious circles, such as his appointment to the M.A.A.I. Academy in 1965. He received the Prince Bernhard Silver Medal in Düsseldorf and achieved significant glory at the Venice Biennale in 1970.

His hands collected many medals and titles throughout the seventies:

  • The Gold Medal for painting in Rome in 1972.
  • The Prix Palme d’Or des Beaux-Arts in Monte-Carlo during 1974 and 1975.
  • The Marquis Award in Chicago in 1977.
  • The Trofeo d’Oro at the Biennale Internazionale d’Arte, Italy in 1977.
  • The Gold Medal at the International Art Competition USA in 1978.

Beyond these prizes, he held academic positions, serving as a professor at the Accademia delle Signoria di Firenze and receiving honorary titles from institutions in Salsomaggiore and Rome. His life was one of constant movement between the studio and the academy.

A Legacy in Collections

The physical traces of his labor remain held within some of the most significant repositories of modern art. His works, ranging from oil and collage on board to graphic pieces, have found permanent homes in institutions such as the Tate Gallery in London and the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris. In North America, his presence is felt in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.

Collectors and museums alike have preserved pieces like Merlin, created in 1967, which demonstrates his ability to blend materials. Even as decades passed, his work continued to appear in the auction rooms of South Bay Auctions and elsewhere, ensuring that the name Yargo De Lucca remains linked to the broader history of twentieth-century art.
