A Life in Lines and Light

Bernhard Wilhelm Wohlfahrt entered the world in Gothenburg, Sweden, on September 12, 1812. Born to a wholesaler, his path was shaped by the disciplined study of form under Christian Didrik Forssell at the Art Academy in Stockholm during the early 1830s. He possessed a versatile hand, capable of moving between the delicate precision of pencil and watercolor to the more substantial weight of oil painting and lithography.

His interests were often found in the movement of specific spaces. He sought to capture the atmosphere of concert halls, riding arenas, and the theater. These scenes were not merely observations but attempts to fix a particular moment of social or musical life onto paper. His work frequently turned toward the human face, producing portraits that documented the figures of his era.

The Art of the Moment

Wohlfahrt’s technical range allowed him to document various facets of Swedish society through different mediums. While he worked in oil, much of his lasting presence in collections comes from his graphic work and lithographs. He captured notable individuals such as Jenny Lind and Emilie Högqvist, translating their likenesses into reproducible prints.

His repertoire included:

  • Portraits of prominent figures like Otto Klingspor
  • Genre paintings depicting social scenes
  • Lithographic subjects including Eduard d'Aubert
  • Religious imagery such as Madonna and Heliga Modern med Barnet i en Bedrceua

Beyond the canvas, he was a man of letters and an organizer. He arranged historical art exhibitions and tableaux within social circles, acting as both a collector of engravings and a critic of the arts. His life was marked by a deep engagement with the visual culture of Stockholm.

The Final Chapter

The later years of Wohlfahrt’s life were shadowed by personal struggle. In 1862, he was admitted to Konradsberg due to insanity, a period that preceded his death in Stockholm on April 1, 1863. Despite the complexities of his final years, his contributions remain held within significant institutions, including the National Museum in Stockholm and the Malmö Museum. His work survives as a record of the people and places that defined mid-nineteenth-century Swedish life.
