Allan Ramsay, narozený 13. října 1713 v Edinburghu ve Skotsku, se vyprofiloval jako přední skotský portrétista, jehož díla zachycovala eleganci a rafinovanost své doby. Jeho umělecká cesta začala ve dvaceti letech cestou do Londýna, kde studoval pod vedením švédského malíře Hanse Hysinga, následovaného výukou v Akademii St. Martin's Lane. Zásadním zvratem v Ramsayho uměleckém vývoji byla jeho cesta do Říma a Neapole, kde strávil tři roky (1736-1738) studiem pod vedením Francesca Solimeny a Imperialiho (Francesca Fernandieho). Zlomovým momentem v Ramsayho kariéře bylo jmenování Hlavním malířem krále Jiřího III. v roce 1761. Tato prestižní pozice upevnila jeho postavení mezi uměleckou elitou a zajistila stálý proud zakázek od královské rodiny a vysoké společnosti. Stal se *portrétistou* georgiánské éry.
Ramsayho pozdější život se nesl ve znamení literárních snah, což odráželo jeho široký intelektuální zájem. Osobní tragédie – náhodné vykloubení pravé paže a úmrtí jeho druhé manželky v roce 1782 – však ovlivnily jeho zdraví a produktivitu. Zemřel v roce 1784.
