Frederick Sproston Challener was a Canadian painter known for his work as a muralist, an easel painter of oils and watercolours, and a draftsman in black-and-white and pastel. Born in London, United Kingdom, he spent much of his life in Canada, where he became recognized as one of the foremost mural decorators. His artistic journey began after being recognized by John Arthur Fraser, who supported his studies at the Ontario School of Art. He later studied at the Toronto Art Students' League and privately with George Agnew Reid. His career spanned various mediums, including illustrations for books and commercial art, and he was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
Challener’s career was marked by significant public and private commissions. His mural work included decorations for the Toronto City Hall, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, and several hotels such as the King Edward Hotel and the Royal Alexandra Hotel. He also painted murals for passenger boats like the S.S. Kingston and the S.S. Montreal. Notably, he created large murals for the Grand Hall of the Parkwood Estate and several paintings for the billiard room of Colonel Robert Samuel McLaughlin. During the First World War, he served as a painter for the Canadian War Memorials Department, producing works such as Canada's Grand Armada. His paintings are held in various collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
