The Life and Art of Eduard Wiiralt

Eduard Wiiralt was an Estonian graphic artist born in Kalitino Manor, Tsarskoselsky Uyezd, Saint Petersburg Governorate. After his family moved to Estonia in 1909, he entered the Tallinn School of Applied Art at age 17, where he was influenced by the painter and draughtsman Nikolai Triik. His formal education was interrupted by the German occupation and revolution, leading him to study in the sculpture studio of Anton Starkopf at the Pallas art school in Tartu. Following his participation in the Estonian War of Independence, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Art in Germany under Professor Selmar Werner.

Wiiralt's career took him to Paris in 1925, where he lived almost without interruption until 1938. During his time in Paris, he created the etching Hell. In 1937, he was honored with a gold medal at the International Graphic Exhibition in Vienna. His travels also included a period in Marrakesh, Morocco, from July 1938 to February 1939. After surviving World War II, he lived in Sceaux, France, and died in Paris at the age of 55 in the Danncourt hospital.
