The Sketch — simon nsobundu okeke

Simon Obiekezie Okeke was a modern Nigerian painter and sculptor born in Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra state in 1937. He obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology (NCAST), Zaria in 1960 and was a founding member of the Zaria Art Society. He received further training at the British Museum, London, from 1961-1962. He also traveled and toured museums across Europe and America; was a curator at the National Museum, Lagos; served as a part-time lecturer at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos; and was also commissioned to design postage stamps and currency notes for the Government of the erstwhile Republic of Biafra in the 60s. His paintings explored themes on his Igbo culture and the African heritage in general, are held in private and public collections at home and abroad and have been widely exhibited since his death. He was also a founding member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA).The Sketch is a drawing of a mother embracing and cuddling her child in her arms. The child seems to be sitting on the laps of her kneeling mother. Simon Okeke uses the uli style of representation to explore, as a theme, the unique bond between an African mother and her child, the tenderness and warmth normally found between both characters. Staring at the piece one might guess that both parties are in a joyful mood having looked for each other for a while.

A Beacon of Nigerian Artistic Heritage: The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art

Nestled on the campus of Pan-Atlantic University in Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria, stands a singular institution – The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art. More than just an exhibition space, it’s a testament to visionary philanthropy and a celebration of Nigeria's vibrant artistic legacy, marking the nation’s first university art museum.

Established in October 2019 thanks to the generous donation of Prince Yemisi Shyllon—one of Africa’s foremost art collectors—the museum embodies a remarkable blend of scholarly rigor and aesthetic beauty. Its creation stemmed from a desire to foster artistic appreciation within the university community and to safeguard Nigeria's cultural treasures for future generations.

    A Legacy Built on Passion:

The genesis of YSMA lies in April 2011 with the launch of the Virtual Museum of Modern and Contemporary Nigerian Art, showcasing Shyllon’s dedication to disseminating art knowledge. Subsequent proposals from other collectors solidified the vision for a physical museum at PAU.

    Architectural Harmony:

Designed by Jess Castellote, the museum building prioritizes natural light and open spaces, creating an inviting environment that complements its artistic collections.

    Celebrating Nigeria’s Artistic Soul

The museum's core strength resides in its impressive collection of over 1000 artworks spanning pre-colonial times to the present day. These pieces represent a comprehensive panorama of Nigerian art history, reflecting diverse cultural traditions and artistic styles.

    Sculptural Diversity:

From intricate Yoruba wooden sculptures by Lamidi Olonade Fakeye to monumental Ife head replicas—symbols of Nigeria’s ancient civilizations—the sculptural collection showcases remarkable craftsmanship and stylistic evolution.

    Painting Masters:

Notable artists like Ben Enwonwu, El Anatsui, Bruce Onobrakpeya, and Aina Onabolu contribute to the museum's painting repertoire. Their canvases capture pivotal moments in Nigerian history and artistic expression.

    Historical Significance & Cultural Impact

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, YSMA plays a crucial role in educating students and researchers about Nigeria’s artistic heritage. Exhibits on Ife art and Benin art—featuring iconic bronze sculptures like the Ife head—provide invaluable insights into the region's rich cultural past.

    Photographic Narratives:

The museum’s photographic archive documents significant Nigerian cultural festivals, capturing the dynamism of traditions and artistic performances. Ariyo Oguntimehin’s photographs are particularly noteworthy.

A Unique Contribution to Art Education

The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art distinguishes itself as Nigeria's inaugural university art museum—a pioneering endeavor that underscores the importance of fostering creativity and cultural understanding. Its mission extends beyond mere display; it strives to inspire dialogue, promote artistic appreciation, and contribute to the intellectual enrichment of its visitors.
