The two piece back of this instrument is made of maple, and the same wood has been used to produce both the sides and the headstock, with inserted neck. The two piece soundboard is of spruce, as usual. The white strips of the purfling are beech, while the black ones are made of an unidentified material. Gennaro is a leading member of the Neapolitan family of violin makers called Gagliano. Having commenced business in the early 18th century with Alessandro (1660 - before 1735), the Gagliano family’s activity in this instrumental sector continued in Naples until the latter half of the 1800s through the commitment of many other family members, precisely Nicola I (1695 - after 1758), Ferdinando (1724 circa - 1781), Giuseppe (known since 1770 to 1800), Antonio I (1728 - 1795 circa), Giovanni I (1740 circa - 1806), Antonio II (after 1790 - 1860) and Raffaele (1790 circa - 1857).
