A Life of Courtly Service

Anton Boys was a Flemish painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who began his career in Antwerp. After training in that city, he embarked on an international journey that led him through Italy, Spain, Prague, Innsbruck, and Landshut. As a free master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, he achieved significant professional standing, eventually serving as a court painter to Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria. During this tenure, he produced various portraits of members of the imperial House of Habsburg, many of which are preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. His work also served as a visual record of the Habsburgs, including engravings for a book describing celebrations for the Order of the Golden Fleece and a large-scale depiction of a wedding banquet for an aristocratic family.

Artistic Works and Engravings

The artistic output of Anton Boys includes significant portraiture and detailed illustrations. He was commissioned to create Ahnenbilder, or ancestor portraits, for Count Jakob Hannibal I and Archduke Ferdinand II, often working from older originals. His skill as an illustrator is evidenced by his work on the Ordentliche Beschreibung, a book published in 1587. Through folding plates, Boys depicted complex scenes such as cavalry battles, ritual ceremonies, processions, and banquets.

One of his notable large-scale works is the Banquet of the Hohenems family, commissioned in 1578 to commemorate the wedding of Duchess Margaretha von Hohenems and Fortunat Freiherr zu Madruz. This painting depicts twenty-four individuals seated at a festive table within a Renaissance palace park, set against an idealized mountain landscape. The scene captures a variety of figures, including the host, his brother Mark Sittich, and the wedding couple, alongside servants, musicians, and a court jester.
