The Fleming Collection: A Celebration of Scottish Art

Located in the heart of London, The Fleming Collection stands as a singular testament to Scotland’s artistic heritage—a repository of over 600 masterpieces spanning from the mid-17th century through to contemporary creations. Unlike traditional museums confined to brick and mortar walls, this institution champions Scottish creativity through dynamic touring exhibitions and strategic loans across the UK and Europe, redefining accessibility and fostering a deeper appreciation for British art history.

Its origins lie in an ambitious vision conceived by Robert Fleming & Co., a Dundee-based banking firm. Recognizing the importance of showcasing Scotland’s artistic legacy, the bank initiated its collection journey in 1968, selecting artworks that would adorn its newly established London headquarters. David Donald, appointed as Director of Art Acquisitions, skillfully steered this endeavor, prioritizing Scottish artists and scenes—a deliberate choice reflecting the bank's pride in its roots.

The Collection’s evolution accelerated following Donald’s untimely passing in 1985, when Robert Fleming and Bill Smith continued his work. Recognizing the need for preservation, The Fleming Family established The Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation in 2000, securing a dedicated gallery space on Berkeley Street—a pivotal moment transforming the Collection into a ‘museum without walls.’ This innovative model ensured that Scottish art remained visible beyond London’s confines, attracting visitors from across Europe.

From 2016 onwards, The Fleming Collection embraced its current ethos of outreach and engagement. Following the closure of Berkeley Street Gallery, James Knox took over as Director, prioritizing touring exhibitions—most notably focusing on the Scottish Colourists and Glasgow Boys—and bolstering collaborations with international institutions. This strategic shift solidified The Fleming Collection’s position as a beacon for Scottish art scholarship and public appreciation.

The Collection's remarkable breadth encompasses several artistic movements: The 18th & 19th Century Masters, featuring luminaries like Allan Ramsay, Henry Raeburn, Jacob More, Sir David Wilkie, and William McTaggart; The Glasgow Boys—Arthur Melville, John Lavery, James Guthrie, Edward Walton, Joseph Crawhall and Edward Atkinson Hornel—who revolutionized Scottish painting with their bold experimentation; And the Scottish Colourists—Samuel John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell—whose vibrant palettes captured the spirit of a transformative era. Furthermore, The Collection’s 20th & Contemporary Art wing showcases artists like James Cowie, Stanley Cursiter, Anne Redpath, William Johnstone, William George Gillies, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Robert Colquhoun, Alan Davie, Joan Eardley, Craigie Aitchison, Elizabeth Blackadder, David McClure, John Byrne, Will Maclean, John Bellany, Alison Watt and Jock McFadyen—artists who continue to push boundaries and redefine artistic expression.

Among the Collection’s standout pieces are “Lemons Dripping” by Helen Flockhart and “Canute” by Helen Flockhart. These artworks exemplify the Collection's commitment to showcasing both established masters and emerging talent, reflecting Scotland’s enduring contribution to the global art landscape.
