من قلب بودابست المجرية، وفي الثلاثين من أبريل عام 1869، وُلد فيليب أليكسيوس دي لازلو، المعروف أصلاً باسم فيلوب لاوب، لتبدأ رحلة صعود استثنائية من جذور متواضعة إلى قمة المجد كرسام بورتريه احتفى به ملوك وأرستقراطيي أوروبا. نشأ في كنف والدين بسيطين؛ حيث كان والده أدولف يعمل خياطاً ووالدته جوهانا تعمل خياطة، وكلاهما من أصول يهودية. بدأت مسيرته الفنية بتعلم فن التصوير الفوتوغرافي تزامناً مع دراساته الفنية، مما صقل نظرته البصرية، قبل أن يفتح له باب الأكاديمية الوطنية للفنون في بودابست، حيث نهل العلم على يد العمالقة بيرتالان سيكي وكارولي لوتز. ولم تتوقف آفاقه عند هذا الحد، بل امتدت رحلته الاستكشافية إلى ميونيخ وباريس، مما أضفى عمقاً وثراءً جديداً على رؤيته الفنية.
