ولد آلان رامسای في إدنبرة، اسكتلندا، في الثالث عشر من أكتوبر عام 1713، وبرز كرسام بورتريه اسكتلندي بارز، اشتهرت أعماله بالتقاط أناقة ورقي عصره. بدأت رحلته الفنية في سن العشرين عندما سافر إلى لندن للدراسة تحت إشراف الرسام السويدي هانز هيسينغ، ثم تلقى تدريباً في أكاديمية شارع مارتين لين. زود هذا التدريب الأساسي رامسای بقاعدة متينة في التقنية والتكوين.
