A Life Painted in Light and Water

Michele Elizabeth Field, born Michele Wright, was an artist whose soul seemed inextricably linked to the tranquil rhythms of the English landscape. Born on June 10, 1953, in Solihull, West Midlands, her early years were shaped by a profound fascination with the natural world. This innate curiosity found its most potent expression through the serene waterways and rolling vistas of Oxford—a region that would become the heartbeat of her creative vision. Her palette was often a direct reflection of this environment, mirroring the soft, luminous hues of the Thames and the verdant, undulating textures of the Chiltern Hills. Through her work, one does not merely see a landscape; one feels the atmospheric weight of a misty morning or the warmth of sunlight filtering through a summer canopy.

Her formal journey into the mastery of medium began at the Plymouth College of Art, where she meticulously honed her skills in both watercolor and oil painting. While her technical foundation was rigorous, it was her relocation to Oxford in 1980 that truly catalyzed her artistic evolution. Immersed in the city’s rich artistic heritage, Field established herself as a freelance artist with an unwavering commitment to emotional resonance.

Answer in your own words. There are no wrong answers here — only answers you can explain.

    1. What catches your eye first, and why?
    2. Which colours or shapes create the mood — and what is that mood?
    3. Our catalogue files this work under: winter scene, british wildlife, robin bird. Do you agree? What would you add, or take away?
    4. Look back at Poppies, Buttercups and Daisies (2007), earlier in this guide. Name two things it shares with this work, and one that is different.
    5. Contemporary Realism: Living artists painting the real world with traditional skill, often from photographs as well as from life. Where can you see that in this work?
