The Architect of the Printed Page
To look at the works associated with John Carington Bowles is to see the mechanics of eighteenth-century London commerce. He was not a painter in the traditional sense, but a printer, publisher, and bookseller who controlled the flow of visual information through the streets of London. His operation, often working as John Bowles & Son at the Black Horse in Cornhill, functioned as a vital node in the distribution of maps, engravings, and satirical prints. He did not create the images so much as he ensured they reached the hands of the public.
His professional life was defined by apprenticeship and partnership. Apprenticed to John Bowles in 1741, he eventually took over the business, establishing a presence at St. Paul's Churchyard. This was a position of significant logistical influence. He managed the dissemination of diverse materials, ranging from topographical copperplate engravings of Wiltshire and Dorset to the more ephemeral mezzotint drolls that captured the social absurdities of his era.
Technical Reach and Dissemination
The breadth of Bowles's output reveals a man deeply embedded in the technical landscape of printmaking. He was responsible for bringing various mediums to the London market, including:
- Copperplate engravings detailing English topography and maps.
- Mezzotint prints that focused on social satire and character studies.
- Instructional texts regarding the application of water-colours, crayons, and glass painting.
- The publication of works by other engravers, such as those by John Collett.
His role involved a heavy reliance on the skill of others. While he published many works, the actual artistry often resided with engravers like Sullivan L or Joseph Ellis. Bowles provided the infrastructure for these artists to exist in the marketplace. His catalogs show a specific interest in the intersection of utility and leisure, publishing everything from accurate maps of North Wales to satirical pieces like The Unlucky Discovery.
A Legacy of Information
Bowles's significance lies in his role as a gatekeeper of visual literacy. By managing the publication of instructional manuals such as The Artist's Assistant, he helped standardize the methods for drawing, perspective, and etching for a new generation of learners. He turned the technical processes of mezzotinto-scraping and copper engraving into accessible commodities.
He died in 1793, leaving behind a record of a career built on the precise management of London's print trade. His work remains a primary source for understanding how geography and social satire were consumed by the public during the late eighteenth century. He was a man of the trade, focused on the durability of the printed word and image rather than the singular expression of an individual hand.
