Martin Schongauer (i) - Paper (i) - 7 x 10 cm - (Kupferstichkabinett (Berlin, Germany))

This work seems to be a portrait drawn from life. However, it is highly uncertain whether this statement – which seems obviously correct according to the preconceived notions of today\

Early Life and Training

Martin Schongauer, a renowned Alsatian engraver and painter, was born in Colmar, Alsace, around 1450. He was the third of four or five sons of Caspar Schongauer, a goldsmith from Augsburg who had moved to Colmar about 1440. Caspar's profession as a goldsmith likely influenced Martin's early training in engraving, a skill distinct and difficult, often used on metal vessels.

University and Artistic Development

Schongauer was sent to the University of Leipzig in 1465, but he left after a year, suggesting that his true calling was not in academia. Instead, he trained as a painter with Caspar Isenmann, a neighbour and local master influenced by Early Netherlandish painting, particularly Rogier van der Weyden.

Artistic Style and Influences

Schongauer's style shows no trace of Italian influence but a clear, organised Gothic, drawing from both German and Early Netherlandish painting. His engravings, numbering 116, are attributed to him based on his monogram, with many also being copied by other artists, as was common in the period.
