History
The museum was established in 1801, during the French occupation of Belgium. It was originally called the Musée Central des Arts and was located in the Palace of Charles of Lorraine.
In 1845, the museum moved to its current location on the Place Royale/Koningsplein. The building was designed by the architect Alphonse Balat and is considered a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture.
