"The Day After"

Edvard Munch - Oil On Canvas - 115 x 152 cm - 1895 - (Nasjonalgalleriet (Oslo, Norway))

Edvard Munch would often paint prostitutes in a grotesque light, showing them as very ugly and undesirable but in The Day After, the figure lays a heavy resemblance to the Madonna. It was received by the public with disgust. In the image, a woman is draped delicately over a bed. On the table in the foreground, we see the emphasis on alcohol and gives clue to her lifestyle. The muted tones and the mystery behind the woman make the painting a timeless work. But Munch knew well about the reaction he would get as he had seen how his colleagues' similar work was received. Although Munch was more of an Expressionist, his portraits only came much later in his career. This painting is currently held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
