Early Life and Training
Filippo Lippi, later known as Filippino Lippi, was born in April 1457 in Prato, Tuscany, Italy. He was the illegitimate son of Fra Filippo Lippi, a renowned painter, and Lucrezia Buti. Filippino's early training under his father laid the foundation for his future success.
Artistic Career
Filippino's artistic career can be divided into several phases, each marked by distinct stylistic developments:
- Early Period (1475-1480): His initial works, such as the Madonnas of Berlin, London, and Washington, were initially attributed to an anonymous "Amico di Sandro" ("Friend of Botticelli"). These early pieces showed a less sensitive and subtle style compared to his later work.
- Evolution (1480-1485): As Filippino's style matured, he developed a more personal and effective approach, as seen in his works from this period, including the Journeys of Tobia at the Galleria Sabauda, Turin.
- Maturity (1485-1504): Filippino's later work, such as the Apparition of Christ to the Virgin (c. 1493, now in Munich), showcased his mastery of the High Renaissance style.
