"The Empire of Light, II"

Rene Magritte (i) - Art Deco (i)
The Empire of Light II exists in many versions. These Surrealist pieces were painted from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Empire of Light II has a bigger dimension than its predecessor, but it shows the same dark, a nocturnal street with houses with the light emanating from the indoors. Their trees along the side are lit by a single lamppost that pours light in the area. The most striking is the bright blue sky above the dark subdued colours of the night. The sky is daytime, the blue is pastel with white fluffy clouds passing by. The stark contrast of night and day creates an uncomfortable feeling and disturbs a basic premise of life. 27 paintings were made with this idea in mind, all of them depicting the same concept of night and day. This was an impersonal and precise style that Magritte had preferred since the 1920s. On his ideas, Magritte says, "I have always felt the greatest interest in night and in day, yet without ever having preferred one or the other. This great personal interest in night and day is a feeling of admiration and astonishment.” It has provided inspiration for many creations in pop culture.
