French painter Gustave Courbet made “L'Origine du monde” or “The Origin of the World” in 1866. Here, he closes up on a naked woman’s abdomen and genitals. She’s spreading her legs as she lies on a bed. The erotic nature of the work is emphasized by the way the nude body and her parts are framed. Controversial debates related to vouyerism surround this painting to this day. The figure in the painting is based on James Whistler’s lover and a young model by the name Joanna Hifferman. This is one of the four portraits that Gustav made with Hifferman as the model. Paris Match in 2013 claimed that art scholar Jean-Jacques Fernier had plagiarized the Corbet painting for one of his works but after several formal deliberations, the claim was debunked by Musée d'Orsay, two years later. Courbet, along with the likes of Manet, revolutionized the way naked bodies appeared on paintings. His nude portraits had extremely realist depictions, where he didn’t hold back at all.
