  Francis Bacon’s paintings Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his bold and raw imagery. He produced some of the most iconic paintings of wounded and traumatized humanity in post-war art.
 
 
Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his bold and raw imagery. He produced some of the most iconic paintings of wounded and traumatized humanity in post-war art. Borrowing inspiration from Surrealism, he forged a distinctive style that made him one of the most recognized exponents of figurative art in the 1940s and 1950s. Most of his paintings depict the human figure in scenes that suggest alienation, violence and suffering.
His works owned by major museums around the world, and he has been the subject of several retrospective exhibitions. Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" broke the record for the most expensive work ever sold at auction in 2013, when it was purchased for a final price of $142.4 million at Christie's in New York.
