Christian Krohg was a Norwegian naturalist painter, illustrator, author, and journalist. He was born on August 13, 1852, in Oslo, Norway, to lawyer and statesman Georg Anton Krohg (1817–1873) and the grandson of Christian Krohg (1777–1828), who was a government minister. Krohg studied law at the University of Oslo (then Christiania) from 1869 to 1873.
Early Life and Education
Krohg's early life was marked by his interest in art, which led him to study under Hans Gude at the Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe. He later worked in Paris from 1881 to 1882, where he was inspired by the ideas of realists. This influence is evident in his choice of motifs, which primarily focused on everyday life and its darker or socially inferior sides.

Some of Krohg's most notable works include Sovende mor med barn (Sleeping mother with child), Håret flettes (The hair is being braided), and Trett (Tired). Krohg was the founding editor of the Bohemian journal, Impressionisten, in 1886. He later became a journalist for the Oslo newspaper Verdens Gang from 1890 to 1910, where he wrote remarkable portrait interviews. Krohg then became a professor and director at the Norwegian Academy of Arts (Statens Kunstakademi) from 1909 to 1925.
