"In Bed The Kiss"

Henri De Toulouse Lautrec (i) - 1892 - Post-Impressionism (i)
A brothel in Paris had commissioned Henri De Toulouse Lautrec to decorate their salon, he began to stay there to observe the daily lives of the prostitutes and produced many similar works, he portrayed lesbian relationships without imposing the male gaze but rather provided “a glimpse of real intimacy in an otherwise constructed world of sexual extravagance and simulated fantasy” (National Gallery of Australia). Many brothels didn’t have enough beds, so the women shared their beds and developed relationships. In Bed The Kiss shows two women wrapped in a passionate kiss, their embrace seems to show fear of loss, fear of separation. This post-impressionist painting includes a brilliant selection of colours - shades of red and yellow that are subdued by grey, green and blue. The unkempt hair and bedsheets, the tightness of their grasp and the woman’s slightly open eyes- they all show a tenderness that the two lovers shared, uncaring of the world or the artist. His other portrayals show the same sensitivity and tenderness shared by the women living there. It was sold at Sotheby's in London in February 2015.
