"Calla Lily Vendor"

Diego Rivera (i) - Oil (i) - Realism (i)
Diego Rivera's work has depicted the everyday lives of the indigenous people of Mexico, he is among the most renowned artist from North America, noted for his murals. Calla Lily Vendors shows two women kneeling in front of a basket of flowers, their back facing the viewer. It is only the flowers that we see clearly as the Lilies also obstruct the view of a man behind them, seeing only his hat and his hand on the left, touching the flowers. The two women wear traditional fringed shawls or rebozo; this was not just decorative but had utility as it allowed them to attach baskets to the fabric, making it easier for them to travel. This painting gives us access to a cultural depth, the calla lily is a quintessential example of Mexico's flora and is associated with death, symbolizing the suffering of the native people and an ode to the beauty of Mexico’s native cultures.
