"The Banquet"

Rene Magritte (i) - Oil (i) - 1958 - Surrealism (i)
Made in 1958, “The Banquet” was preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago as a part of the Lindy and Bergman Collection, 143 in 1991. The first version of this painting was done through the use of gouache in 1956. Even though Magritte was an essential member of the surrealist movement in Paris, his paintings, including this, showcase a great understanding of realism. The wall in the foreground, the trees in the mid-ground and the fields along with some more unintelligible trees in the background demonstrate his command over realistic depictions. What makes this painting, along with several other works of Rene Magritte, surreal or strange, is the presence of an element of misfit. In the case of this painting, it’s the large red circle covering the trees in the mid-ground. The red circle also showcases an influence of ‘Papier Collé’ on Magritte’s painting, a style which incorporates paper cut-outs being pasted to a flat mount. The red circle is meant to depict the setting sun, but instead of being covered by the trees, it’s the trees that are blocked by the sun. It quite possibly also evokes the moon. Magritte’s common theme of distinguishing the invisible from the hidden is also boldly present here.
